Epistemology is concerned with various aspects of the nature of knowledge therefore it is closely related to congitive science furthermore epistemology, especially naturalized epistemology witnessed exceptional measures of development in the last decade. This lecture introduces students to the basic issues of epistemology. Accordingly the teaching material covers the problem of justification, different sources of knowledge and their cognitive grounds. Further topics, such as the problem of extended minds, the knowledge of mixed systems such as computer-human cooperation, group knowledge and the knowledge attribution to agents in dynamic game-theoretical models are discussed in order to provide an insight to the most recent topics of the field.

The purpose of this course is to make you able to

  • understand and analyze epistemological theories.
  • properly use the concepts and arguments of this field.
  • discuss epistemological issue in the context of other approaches to human cognition.
  • write a scientific paper in English as a draft eligible for later publication.

Week 1: Introduction - Science and knowledge: the problem of defining knowledge and writing a scientific paper about it

Week 2: The problem of justifying doxastic attitudes: Internalism

Week 3: The problem of justifying doxastic attitudes: Externalism

Week 4: Sources of Knowledge I. - Intuition and perception

Week 5: Sources of knowledge II. - Memory

Week 6: Sources of knowledge III. - Testimony

Week 7: Sources of knowledge IV. - Inference

 

 

 

Week 8: Test 1 - 1st submission: 1500 words

Week 8: Naturalized epistemology and its connection to neuroscience.

Week 9: Constitution, extended mind, functionalism and epistemology.

Week 10: Knowledge-first epistemology.

Week 11: no class

Week 13: Formal epistemology: dynamic epistemic systems of agents

Week 14: Meta-espistemology: Epistemic consequentialism, Deontic epistemology and Virtue epistemology

 

 

Week 15: Test 2 - second submission 1500 words.

  • Requirements
  • Knowledge of the reading materials.
  • Essay (60%): Two, 2-4 pages essay, on one of the topics discussed.
  • Test : (40%)
